Founded in 1986, Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Arts & Cultural Troupe has been established for more than 30 years. The Children's Performing Arts class, launched in 1987, pioneered the teaching of Speech and Drama in Mandarin. Today, it is one of the most established and recognised youth learning centres in Singapore.

Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Arts & Cultural Troupe (SHHKACT) first opened its doors to 99 students who enrolled in Singapore’s first Chinese Children Speech and Drama class in 1987. To date, SHHKACT has an annual intake of 2000 students, it has sowed the seeds of Chinese Arts & Culture in the hearts of students abound.

Innovative, Lively
SHHKACT pioneered the teaching model of using Speech & Drama to teach Chinese, thus breaking the stereotype that learning Chinese was inherently uninteresting. Due to the novel and lively approach in the teaching style, the classes were always filled with fun and laughter. The children’s enthusiasm and interest in learning Chinese were highly stimulated. Over the years, SHHKACT core ideals revolve primarily around development of the Cultural Arts and the learning of Chinese, which is reflected evidently in its continuous improvement and development of its curriculum. Currently, SHHKACT has nearly 20 courses in the Cultural Arts and Chinese Language. It has regularly organized various Chinese Language camps and workshops to cater to the different needs and demands of children today.

Legacy, Continuity
SHHKACT strive to promote Chinese drama activities for local youths. In 1988, its inaugural Children Performance Troupe was established from a selected pool of outstanding students from its Speech & Drama classes. The Children Performance Troupe participated in numerous performances of different scales. Subsequently, four years later, its Teen Performance Troupe was also established. The Performance Troupe’s high standards in the performing arts was widely recognized and acknowledged by local and foreign audiences. As the children in the Performance Troupe grew up, it borne the establishment of the Youth Performance Troupe in 2000. The Youth Performance Troupe was established to provide a space and stage for the youths who loved and were passionate about the theatre arts, it also represented the spirt of SHHKACT in promoting its legacy and continuity for the love of Chinese Cultural Arts.
